For Mothers and Grandmothers everywhere

Infant Joy

These hands, old now,
served you well,
held you after your birth,
smoothed your brow with love,
held your hand
as you learned to walk,
dressed you, taught you
how to tie shoes.
I watched you smile in delight
when you succeeded.

The same hands,
soothed your brow
when illness struck,
bathed your warm body,
and hugged you as you
grew strong again,
but the hands I remember most
are your tiny hands
as they smoothed my face,
then hugged me around the neck
as you whispered,
"I love you Mummy."
