The Angel of the North

Her mighty wings span the sky,
(Though sadly she will never fly),
This angel beautiful and bold,
Stands high for thousands to behold.
Observed from several motorways
Many daily look and gaze
At the huge 'Angel of the North',
When they are driving back and forth.
Others come daily to her feet,
They look with awe and warmly greet,
This angel beautiful and bold.
Her mighty wings span the sky,
(Though sadly she will never fly).

-c.Jean M. Lewis January 2001-

The sculpture reaches 20 metres high (65ft) and has a wing
span of 54 metres(175ft) and is almost as big as a jumbo jet!

The scultpor Antony Gormley said:

"People are always asking why an angel? The only response I can give is that no one has ever seen one and we need to keep imagining them. The angel has 3 functions -  firstly a historic one to remind us thatbelow this site coal miners worked in the dark for 200 years, -  secondly to grasp hold of the future, expressing our transition from the industrial to the information age and lastly to be a focus for our hopes and fears".
